interview

Kevin's appearance on the WB11 morning news in New York.

Emily Francis (interviewer) - For years he showed us the shape of his heart as a member of the Backstreet Boys and just last year he showed us his acting skills when he made his Broadway debut. Yes Kevin Richardson can does it all AND he's here with us this morning. Welcome. It's so great to have you. Bright and early.

Kevin - Thank you. Good morning.

Emily - Now you are the oldest member of the Backstreet Boys. So did you have this responsibility on your shoulders to make sure everybody remained in check, or were you kind of like the big kid?

Kevin - Um, yeah, I kind of did have the responsibility to set a good example. I tried to anyway. *laughs*

Emily - Well you've done a good job. Right? Now before all that you worked at Disney World, is that true?

Kevin - Worked at Walt Disney World for about three years. It's where I met my wife.

Emily - That is so uh... So was she like, Snow White and you Prince Charming?

Kevin - She was in Beauty and the Beast, she was a dancer. And at the time I was a Ninja Turtle.

Emily - A Ninja Turtle? Alright! Pretty impressive. Well things obviously had helped jumpstart your career. Right?

Kevin - It did, I learned a lot at Disney. I had a great time.

Emily - That's great, and not only that you got to ride all the rides for free all the time. I'm sure that was fun.

Kevin - Absolutely, that was a nice perk.

Emily - Now we had Howie on recently and he said that you guys are going back into the studio. Is that...are you in the studio again?

Kevin - Yes, we're in the studio right now. We've been in the studio for the past month and a half and we're trying to have an album ready for late summer.

Emily - That's great. So how is it being back with everybody? Was it nice? I know it's good to take a break.

Kevin - Yeah, it's good to take a break after being on the road non stop for seven years. Which we were very fortunate to be able to do but to take a breather it was really nice.

Emily - Recharge your batteries.

Kevin - Recharge your batteries, get passionate again, and the drive... yeah it feels great.

Emily - Now in addition to that you're also acting, you were in Chicago. Do you like Broadway?

Kevin - Ah, it was a dream come true. I had an incredible time, it was uh one of the most incredible experiences in my life.

Emily - And so I assume you'd like to do it again.

Kevin - Absolutely.

Emily - Alright now in addition to all of that you also have time to charitable causes. I guess you have 29 hours in your day as opposed to 24. Tell us, you're an advocate for Colon Cancer Awareness, but you're coming at it from a different perspective. It's about adult children being able to talk with their parents or people that have it.

Kevin - Exactly. The reason I'm here is because March is Colon Cancer Awareness month. I lost my father to Colon Cancer in 1991 and so I'm honored and feel it's my duty to help raise awareness for the Colon Cancer Alliance. And what we want to do is get children of the baby boomers, people my age and younger to raise questions to their grandparents and parents about getting screened. Because Colon Cancer is one of those cancers that we can defeat if you detect it early you can treat it or prevent it. So we can win this battle and that's why I'm here to raise awareness, get people to talk about it. It's kind of a taboo and embarrassing subject to bring up, but I think our generation is more free than my mother's generation to talk about it.

Emily - Right, communication is so key. Speaking of communication I gotta get back to the wife for a second. You guys have been married almost four years. How did you know that she was the one?

Kevin - Um, she's just um...

Emily - Gorgeous, by the way.

Kevin - Oh thank you. She's just the coolest chick I've ever come across. She's my buddy, she's a friend, and uh yeah. She's just so laid back, so cool, so supportive. We get along great, we're friends and we're lovers.

Emily - Aww, that's great. So you can really, truly say that Disney World is the happiest place on earth because you met her there.

Kevin - I met my wife there.

Emily - That's so great. And what are you doing for St. Patrick's Day? Anything?

Kevin - I'm up here in New York celebrating and spreading the news about people gotta get in and get screened for Colon Cancer.

Emily - Yep, that's so important. Well thank you so much for coming in and you're doing such a good thing and I'm sure it's gonna be helping so many people.

Kevin - Thank you. I appreciate your time and interest. Thank you.

Emily - Thank you for coming on. And for more information about the "it's time to talk about CRC campaign" log on to www.ccalliance.org
